Sorting food waste becomes mandatory for everyone in Brussels as of May 15th.
How, concretely?
You should not put anymore food waste in your white trash bag. Of course, we will all need time to adjust & do it right, but several solutions are possible:
- The small orange bag (with or without its small container), collected once a week
- Neighborhood compost – there are more than 200 in Brussels, so for sure there is one near your place. https://food waste.brussels/compost/neighborhood-compost/
- Individual compost – contrary to popular belief, you don’t necessarily need a lot of space, or an outdoor space. Several options exist, odorless, even for a small kitchen. Check the different options here: https://organicfoodwaste.brussels/solutions/individual-composting/
So even if you live alone, like 45% of Belgian households, and your white trash bag fills up slowly, sorting & therefore recycling organic waste is possible.
But Why sort more?
- Unsorted waste is incinerated, and this cumbersome process is accompanied by significant greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve our objectives in terms of greenhouse gas reduction, set by the Climate Plan, we must reduce the quantities of waste incinerated by 20% by 2030.
- In Brussels, the white bag would still contain 65% of recyclable waste, including 40% of organic waste, a rather easy possibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
