Living in Etterbeek - Where are the women?

3 mars 2025

In this month of March, symbolically dedicated to women’s rights, it is essential to remind ourselves that gender equality remains a goal yet to be achieved, both in Belgium and around the world. Women, although they make up more than half of the population, continue to face persistent inequalities in political, economic, and social spheres.

The recent “family photo” of the Arizona government set the tone for the next legislature: women are underrepresented and well hidden (4 women in the government, 0 in the core executive team). The Etterbeek municipal college also missed the mark, appointing only 2 women alderwomen out of 9 positions, alongside 7 male mayor/aldermen.

The boys’ bands are back — and with them, a worrying step backward.

So, what’s the point of having gender parity requirements on electoral lists if women and other minorities remain invisible in decision-making spaces? More than ever, there’s a real risk of further marginalizing groups that are already statistically more vulnerable. Just look, for example, at the recently announced pension reforms and measures to make work more flexible... Vigilance is needed not only in March: throughout the entire legislature, we will fight for genuine gender parity in representation. That is our commitment!
