Home searches raise major concerns for our fundamental freedoms.

The bill that has been under discussion for months aims, under certain conditions, to allow entry into private homes in order to arrest people without legal residence status. This principle raises serious concerns, in our view, regarding the inviolability of the home and respect for fundamental rights.

In Etterbeek, the Ecolo.Groen group has submitted a motion four times to open the debate in the municipal council. The MR–Les Engagés majority continues to refuse to discuss it, citing the absence of a formal text at the federal level, despite strong citizen engagement alongside ongoing political debates.

Let’s be clear: this is not a technical detail, but a societal choice. Waiting already means taking a position.

Refusing the debate today means avoiding taking a stance on a measure that directly affects individual freedoms.

This discomfort within the majority deserves to be brought to light.

Beyond the issue of home searches, many associations are already warning about the risk of increased pressure on citizens showing solidarity.

Today, no one in Belgium has been convicted for helping migrants on humanitarian grounds.

But tomorrow? The possibility of police interventions in private homes could create a climate of intimidation for those who provide shelter or support.

No reduction of fundamental freedoms

No normalization of intrusions into homes

No pressure on citizen solidarity

Not in our neighborhoods, not in our homes.

The municipal council is chaired by the mayor, who has the responsibility to allow a democratic debate on these essential issues.

Several press articles report on the tensions during the municipal council of April 20 and show that the debate is already very real:
